France has become so much more than a destination to me.
My husband is French, and with his family living here, France has been part of our lives for many years. We have spent countless summers here, celebrated birthdays and holidays, shared long dinners around family tables and created memories in so many different corners of the country.
Somewhere along the way, France started to feel a little like home, too.
And this summer, there was another very special reason to return: the wedding of my brother-in-law and his wonderful wife.
A Wedding Weekend in the French Countryside
We gathered in the beautiful French countryside for a weekend that was exactly what I love so much about celebrations in France: warm, relaxed and full of life.
There was laughter everywhere, emotional moments, long conversations over dinner and tables filled with people who had travelled from different places to be there. Families and friends coming together, languages mixing, glasses being raised and time somehow moving a little slower than usual.
It was one of those weekends made up of countless small moments you wish you could keep forever.
And, of course, I couldn’t completely leave my camera at home.
Being there first and foremost as family made photographing this wedding feel particularly special. There was no pressure to document every second. Instead, I could simply pick up my camera whenever something caught my eye: a quiet moment, beautiful light, an embrace, a detail or one of those fleeting scenes that says so much without needing any direction at all.
Those are often the photographs I love most.
Why I Love Weddings in France
There is something about weddings in France that has always drawn me in.
Perhaps it is the landscapes and the beautiful old houses. The long tables outside on warm summer evenings. The food and wine appearing almost effortlessly throughout the day. Or simply the way celebrations seem to unfold naturally, without ever feeling rushed.
But what I love most is the coming together of people.
As someone whose own life connects Germany and France, international families and celebrations feel very familiar to me. I know what it is like when several languages are spoken around one dinner table, when traditions meet and when guests have travelled across borders to celebrate together.
I speak German, French and English, and being able to move naturally between those languages is something I especially appreciate when photographing destination weddings.
Because ultimately, a wedding is not just about a beautiful place.
It is about feeling at home with the people around you.
Photographing Weddings Across France
This wedding reminded me how much I would love to photograph more love stories in France.
Elegant city weddings in Paris. Sun-soaked celebrations among vineyards and olive trees in Provence. Relaxed wedding weekends close to the Atlantic on the Vendée coast. Intimate celebrations in Normandy. Or perhaps somewhere completely unexpected.
France offers an incredible variety of places to celebrate, but more importantly, it is a country that already means so much to me personally.
So travelling here for a wedding never really feels like travelling somewhere unfamiliar.
It feels a little like coming home.
And I have a feeling France and I still have many stories ahead.
